Grand Egyptian Museum المتحف المصرى الكبير
The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM)
Massive archaeological museum in Giza is set to fully open on November 1, 2025. It has been in a partial "soft opening" phase since October 2024, but the full launch will unveil the rest of its vast collection.
Key information
Location: The museum is located near the Giza pyramid complex, approximately two kilometers away.
Collection: GEM is billed as the largest archaeological museum in the world dedicated to a single civilization. It will house over 100,000 artifacts spanning 7,000 years of Egyptian history, including the entire Tutankhamun collection of over 5,000 items.
Grand opening: The official grand opening is scheduled for November 1, 2025, after multiple delays caused by factors including the COVID-19 pandemic and regional tensions.
Partial access: During the soft opening, visitors have been able to access the main halls and grand staircase, which feature a rotating display of larger artifacts. Other areas include a children's museum, gift shops, and restaurants.
Grand opening exhibits: The official launch will open galleries that were previously inaccessible, including the complete Tutankhamun collection and Khufu's Solar Boat.
Architecture: The building itself is an architectural marvel designed by the Irish firm Heneghan Peng Architects. Its geometric design incorporates a lattice of triangular stones and provides panoramic views of the pyramids from its grand staircase.
Temporary closure: The museum will be temporarily closed from October 15 to November 4, 2025, to prepare for the official opening. It will fully reopen to the public on November 4, the 103rd anniversary of the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb
